Honest comparison

Is shrink wrap worth it?

For outdoor storage in a Toronto winter, usually yes. Here’s how it compares.

Best outdoors

Shrink wrap

Heated tight over a frame. Sheds snow, stays put in strong wind off the lake, keeps leaves and dirt off the deck. One season, nothing to store.

If you own one

Fitted canvas cover

Works well if it fits properly, but it’s a big one-time purchase and still needs a frame and a place to store it all summer.

Risky

Tarp

Flaps in the wind, holds water and snow, lets dirt and animals in. The cheapest choice often costs the most in spring.

Harder than it looks

DIY wrap

Needs a heat gun, the right film, framing and vents, and many marinas restrict open-flame tools. Flat frames and no vents are the usual problems.

Toronto timeline

When to book.

Most boats in Toronto come out between early October and mid-November. Book the day you know your haul-out date.

Questions

Shrink wrap cost FAQ

How much does it cost to shrink wrap a boat in Toronto?
From $23 per foot for open boats up to 22 ft (minimum $400), $27/ft for cuddies and sailboats up to 30 ft, $30/ft for express cruisers 31–40 ft, $37/ft for flybridges and $42/ft for flybridges or trawlers over 40 ft. Jet skis are $195. Prices are before HST and include spring removal.
Is spring removal extra?
No. Spring unwrapping is included in every shrink wrap price. You pay once in the fall.
Is there a travel fee?
No travel fee from Oakville and Bronte through Mississauga, Port Credit and Etobicoke to the Toronto waterfront and Islands. Scarborough, Durham, Burlington and Hamilton have a travel fee, confirmed in your quote, and one fee covers both the fall install and spring removal. Niagara, Barrie, cottages and private docks are by arrangement.
Why do boats of the same length cost different amounts?
Film and framing depend on height, beam and what’s on deck. A flybridge, arch, hardtop or tower needs a bigger frame and more film than an open bowrider of the same length.
Does shrink wrap cause mold?
Not when it’s vented properly. Mold comes from trapped moisture, so we install marine vents on every wrap to let the boat breathe all winter.
When should I book?
As soon as you know your haul-out date. In Toronto most boats come out between early October and mid-November, and the end of October is the busiest time.
