Quick answer

Boat acid wash in one minute

What is a boat acid wash? A marine hull cleaner with mild acids is applied to the gelcoat below and around the waterline to dissolve mineral scale, tannin and rust stains, the brown waterline and what is left after zebra mussels. It is left to work for a short time, then neutralized and rinsed off, so the hull is clean again without heavy scrubbing or sanding.

What it removes
Brown or yellow waterline, mineral scale and calcium, mussel residue, rust and tannin stains on fiberglass and gelcoat.
When
Best right after haul-out, while growth is still soft. Also before shrink wrap, before a sale and before spring launch.
Price
From $500 + HST. The price depends on the condition of the hull, how much growth and scale there is, and the size of the boat. Quote from photos.
Where
Anywhere: on the hard at your marina or yard, or on the trailer at home. No travel fee from Oakville to the Scarborough Bluffs.

What’s included

What’s included in a hull & bottom acid wash.

Scope confirmed from photos. Every boat gets the same careful process: prep, acid wash, neutralize, rinse.

Prep & Pressure Wash (Core)

  • Loose growth, slime and dirt pressure washed off
  • Outdrives, props, trim tabs and metal fittings covered or masked
  • Trailer and cradle pads protected where possible

Acid Wash (Core)

  • Marine hull cleaner applied to the hull and bottom
  • Waterline, boot stripe and bottom treated as needed
  • Short dwell time, then worked by hand on heavy spots

Neutralize, Rinse & Protect

  • Neutralized and rinsed thoroughly so no cleaner stays on the hull
  • Final inspection of the waterline and transom
  • Optional: wax, polish or ceramic after the wash

Every boat is different. The price depends on the condition of the hull, how much growth and scale there is and the size of the boat. Send a few photos and we quote before any work starts.

Why acid wash a boat

What Lake Ontario leaves on your hull.

Fresh water, but not clean water: minerals, tannins and mussels leave marks a normal wash can’t remove.

Brown waterline

The “mustache” line from minerals, tannins and oil. It dissolves with a hull cleaner instead of being scrubbed into the gelcoat.

Mineral scale

Hard, chalky crust below the waterline on boats left in all season.

Zebra & quagga mussels

After the mussels are scraped off, the residue they leave behind is what the acid wash takes care of.

Rust & tannin stains

Streaks from fittings, trailers and leaves on the gelcoat.

Before shrink wrap

Clean the hull before it is wrapped so stains don’t set all winter: boat shrink wrap.

Before a sale

A clean waterline makes a big difference in listing photos: pre-sale detailing.

How We Acid Wash a Boat (Our Approach)

Strong enough to work, careful with everything else.

Hull cleaners with acids work fast, so the process matters as much as the product.

01

Check the hull

How heavy the growth and scale are, and what metal is close by.

02

Pressure wash first

Loose growth and slime off, so the acid works on the stains.

03

Protect metal & trailer

Outdrives, props, anodes and trailer parts covered or kept away from the cleaner.

04

Apply, wait, work

The cleaner dwells briefly; heavy spots are brushed by hand.

05

Neutralize & rinse

Everything rinsed off thoroughly; nothing left on the hull or the ground under it.

06

Protect if you want

Wax or polish after the wash keeps the hull cleaner next season.

Timing

When to book an acid wash.

Growth is easiest to remove while it is still wet. Once it dries on the hull it gets much harder.

Right after haul-out

The best moment: growth is still soft. Book it together with your haul-out date.

Before shrink wrap

Clean first, then wrap: the boat goes into winter clean.

Spring, before launch

If it wasn’t done in the fall, before bottom paint or launch.

Trailer boats

Boats that stay on a trailer and sit in the water for weekends can be done any time.

Combine & save time

Pair it with what the hull needs next.

Most owners book the acid wash together with one more step in the same visit.

Acid wash + wax

Clean hull plus a protective wax, so stains don’t stick as easily: waxing & ceramic.

Acid wash + polish

For dull, chalky gelcoat after cleaning: gelcoat polishing.

Acid wash + bottom paint prep

Before new antifouling: bottom painting.

Acid wash + shrink wrap

One visit at haul-out: clean, then shrink wrap.

FAQs

Boat acid wash: your questions.

What is a boat acid wash?
A marine hull cleaner with mild acids is used on the hull and bottom to dissolve the brown waterline, mineral scale, mussel residue and stains. It is neutralized and rinsed off afterwards.
How much does a boat acid wash cost in Toronto?
From $500 + HST. The price depends on the condition of the hull, how much growth and scale there is and the size of the boat. We quote from photos before any work starts.
Is acid washing safe for gelcoat?
Yes, when it is done correctly: the right marine product, a short dwell time and a full neutralize and rinse. We cover metal parts and keep the cleaner off surfaces it shouldn’t touch.
Will it remove zebra mussels?
Mussels are scraped and pressure washed off first. The acid wash then removes the residue and scale they leave behind on the gelcoat.
When is the best time to acid wash a boat?
Right after haul-out, while the growth is still wet and soft. It also makes sense before shrink wrap, before a sale and in spring before launch.
Can you do it on the trailer at my house?
Yes. We work everywhere: at home on the trailer, at marinas and at storage yards across the GTA.
