What’s Included in Compounding & Gelcoat Polishing

We tailor the process to your gelcoat condition, color, and how the boat was maintained (waxed, coated, neglected). Typical scope includes:

Surface Prep (Core)

  • Wash + decontamination to remove film and residue
  • Inspection of oxidation level and defect depth
  • Masking/protection of sensitive areas as needed

Compounding (Core)

  • Machine compounding to remove chalky oxidation and heavy haze
  • Leveling of light surface defects (light scratches, light swirls, dullness)
  • Focus on high-visibility areas (hull sides, transom, topsides as scoped)

Polishing (Core)

  • Machine polishing to refine clarity and maximize gloss
  • Even finish across panels (reduce patchy “half-shiny” look)
  • Final wipe-down and inspection under proper lighting

Optional (Only With Approval)

  • Second-step refinement / multi-stage correction (if needed)
  • Wet sanding (only when necessary; case-by-case)
  • Protection after correction: wax / polymer sealant / ceramic coating
  • Water spot / mineral spot treatment before correction (targeted)
Honest note: Compounding removes oxidation and improves the surface, but it can’t change deeper damage (deep scratches, cracks, crazing, missing gelcoat). Some older gelcoat has permanent wear. We’ll tell you what’s realistic before we start.

Oxidation Removal That Actually Restores Gloss (Our Approach)

Gelcoat oxidation is basically “dead surface” that needs to be cut and refined. Our process is simple and proven:

  1. Clean and inspect (identify oxidation vs staining vs damage)
  2. Compound to remove the chalky layer
  3. Polish to bring back clarity and reflection
  4. Lock it in with protection to slow future oxidation

If your boat is already protected (wax/sealant/ceramic), results come faster. If it’s neglected, we’ll plan the correction level honestly.

Compounding & Polishing Packages

Choose the level that matches condition — we’ll recommend honestly.

One-Step Enhancement (Maintenance Correction)

Best when oxidation is light and you mainly want better gloss.

  • Light compound/polish (single-stage)
  • Improves clarity and cleans up light haze

Great for: newer boats, lightly dull gelcoat, quick pre-sale improvement.

Heavy Oxidation / Multi-Stage Correction (Case-by-Case)

For heavier chalking, uneven finish, or higher expectations.

  • Multi-stage correction as needed
  • May include spot sanding where safe/necessary
  • Often paired with ceramic/sealant protection after
Note: Severe oxidation may require more time and still has limits depending on gelcoat thickness and history. We’ll set expectations clearly.

Boats We Service

  • Bowriders, cruisers, express boats
  • Sailboats
  • Yachts (hull / topsides / transom correction)
  • Brokerage / pre-sale gelcoat restoration

FAQs

Will compounding remove chalky gelcoat?
Yes — that’s exactly what it’s for. Compounding cuts away the oxidized layer, then polishing restores gloss and clarity.
Can you remove scratches too?
Light surface defects, yes. Deep scratches that you can catch with a fingernail may not fully disappear — we’ll be honest about limits.
How long does the result last?
It depends on UV exposure and maintenance. Protection (wax/sealant/ceramic) after polishing dramatically extends the result.
Do you recommend ceramic coating after polishing?
Often yes, especially if you want less cleaning time and longer-lasting gloss. We’ll recommend based on your boat and how you use it.
How long does compounding and polishing take?
Depends on boat size and oxidation level. Light enhancement can be a day; heavier correction can take longer. Send photos + LOA and we’ll quote accurately.
